Introduction
Meet Claude Hendrickson, an experienced professional who excels at inspiring community teamwork and achieving success.
Based in Leeds, UK - In a remarkable celebration of community service and dedication, Mr. Claude Hendrickson, the former president of the St. Kitts and Nevis Association in Leeds, has been awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). The official ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace on November 27, 2023, marking a significant recognition of Hendrickson's outstanding contributions.
Claude Hendrickson, currently serving as the equality, diversity, and inclusion advisor at Leeds Community Homes and the Confederation of Co-op Housing, received the MBE as part of the King's Birthday Honours this year. A moment of pride not only for him but also for the entire St. Kitts and Nevis community in Leeds, England.
Born in 1960, Claude is a first-generation child of St. Kitts and Nevis heritage, residing in Leeds since birth. His dedication to community service is reflected in the numerous organizations he has founded over the years, leaving an indelible mark on Chapeltown.
One of his significant contributions includes founding the Chapeltown Youth Association in 1979, addressing the lack of services for young Black children. Recognizing the importance of music, he played a pivotal role in establishing a sound system to create a safe space for the community amid challenges with the discotheque scene.
In 1988, Claude founded the Front Line Community Self Build Housing Association, aiming to build houses and develop construction skills within the community. His commitment continued with the establishment of Chapeltown's Young People's 10-2 Club in 1992, advocating for the voices of young individuals until 2012.
His involvement in technology and community development led to the opening of YesCyber in 2000, a pioneering community-based internet access point on Chapeltown Road. Claude's dedication extends to supporting community radio for over two decades and serving as the ex-chair of the St. Kitts and Nevis Association in Leeds.
Currently a member of the Windrush National Organisation, Claude passionately advocates for compensation for the Windrush generation, showcasing his commitment to social justice. His extensive involvement in strategic forums addressing issues such as employment, training, health, police, media, Black role models, and community-led housing demonstrates his multifaceted impact.
Claude attributes his success to influential mentors such as Darcus Howe, Clinton Cameron, Gertrude Paul, Joe Gatewood, Mary Saddler Henry Grey, and Arthur France. As a founding member of West Yorkshire Black Male Role Models, he actively collaborates with schools to inspire the next generation.
In reflecting on education, Claude emphasizes, "Even if you think the system is against you, and the teachers are against you, you must get the most out of education. It's the foundation for what happens to you for the rest of your life."
Congratulations to Claude Hendrickson, a true legend in community service, housing, and equality & diversity. The MBE honour is a testament to his tireless efforts and positive impact on the St. Kitts and Nevis community in Leeds.
